Thomas Sorensen could be a backup goalkeeper at Man City

Stoke City ace ThomasSorensen has been linked with a move to FA Cup winners Manchester City where he would almost certainly be Joe Hart's backup but nonetheless making him a very able deputy, much like these shot stoppers.

JOE CORRIGAN
Corrigan starred 603 times for Manchester City yet because of Ray Clemence and Peter Shilton hogging all the playing time at national level, he was restricted to just nine appearances for England between 1976 and 1982, though he was part of the World Cup squad in Spain. Current City no.1 Joe Hart has already surpassed his cap total with 11 and if he maintains the form he has been showing then who is to say he cannot eclipse his club appearance total, too.

Carlo Cudicini
Try as he did, the Italian could not dislodge Petr Cech from between the Chelsea sticks from the moment his rival rocked up at Stamford Bridge in 2004. After years of trying he finally left in 2009 and joined Spurs where the 37-year-old is now backup to error-prone Heurelho Gomes, while now having to contend with Brad Friedel, too. Incidentally, Fabio, his father could not force his way into the Italy national side because of the presence of Dino Zoff. This was despite shining for AC Milan.

Shay Given
He is one of the Premier League's greatest ever goalkeepers and at one point, the most underrated, too. And it isn't just Joe Hart that has forced him to watch games from the substitutes bench more often than not. When he moved to Blackburn in 1994 from Celtic he found himself backup to another England shot stopper, Tim Flowers and in his three years at Ewood Park made just two League starts. Following loan spells at Swindon and Sunderland, his former Rovers boss Kenny Dalglish moved in in 1997 and took him to Newcastle for £1.5m. Twelve years later, the Ireland 'keeper moved to Man City on transfer deadline day in February and having played half a season, kept his place for the 2009/10 campaign only to lose it last season to Joe Hart where he played second fiddle to the youngster until his recent transfer to Aston Villa.

PEPE REINA
We all know how good the bald headed one is and at Liverpool he has been no.1 since his arrival in 2005 but on the international front, he has battled Iker Casillas for the Spain goalkeeper jersey. The 121-capped Casillas is only 30 and the current captain doesn't look like he will be giving up his spot anytime soon.

STEVE OGRIZOVIC
Liverpool signed him after he had played just 16 times for Chesterfield in 1977 and had it not been for the dominance of Ray Clemence, he may have added to his five appearances. It was only when he left in 1982 that his career took off, first at Shrewsbury Town then at Coventry City for whom he played 601 time for in 16 years and won the 1987 FA Cup. He retired in 2000 and, along with Sir Stanley Matthews, Peter Shilton and John Lukic is one of four players to have played in four decades.

BRAD FRIEDEL
It seems that Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp will keep faith with current no.1 goalie Heurelho Gomes, meaning that the 40-year-old American, one of the Premier League's most consistent 'keepers may have to battle it out with Cudicini for the no.2 spot. However, a howler is never too far away with Gomes so Friedel should ready himself…
